Some places stay with you long after you’ve left. Chongwe House is one of those places – a home in the wild where stories are shared, laughter echoes through the trees, and the beauty of the Lower Zambezi unfolds just beyond your doorstep. After a thoughtful redesign and rebuild, we are delighted to welcome guests back this May to experience a refreshed yet familiar retreat on the banks of the Chongwe River.
Whether you’re gathered around the dining table, watching elephants amble past the pool, or lounging around your private outdoor area, every moment here is about connection – both to the people you’re with and the wild surroundings that embrace you. The Lower Zambezi is haven of nature, home to exceptional wildlife and bird species. Set on a secluded stretch of river, this luxurious sole-use house provides a sense of space and time to truly disconnect.
From the poolside deck, the river stretches before you, offering an ever-changing view of wildlife passing by. Crocodiles sunbath in the shallows, fish eagles call from the trees, and the distant Zambezi escarpment paints a breathtaking backdrop to it all. At sunset, the fire-pit beneath the ancient ebony trees becomes a gathering place, where stories of the day’s adventures are swapped over a glass of something refreshing, and the sounds of the night gently settle in around you.
With its earthy tones, smooth curved walls, and a layout that invites guests to fully enjoy the outdoors, it feels as though the house itself is part of the landscape. The design is inspired by the land around us, and every detail has been thoughtfully considered to bring the outside in, with large open spaces where families and friends can come together, relax, and enjoy time spent in nature.
Designed for families and friends traveling together, Chongwe House offers four beautiful bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, featuring indoor and outdoor showers and open-air bathtubs. Whether you choose a double or twin configuration, every room allows guests plenty space to retreat in privacy before coming together again in the shared living areas.
Our dedicated chef and culinary team are always on hand to create meals that bring people together – whether that’s a long, laughter-filled lunch on the deck, a freshly fired pizza straight from the pizza oven, or a relaxed BBQ under the stars. Your own private guide will tailor activities to make sure every day at Chongwe House is an exciting adventure. Set off on a game drive at dawn when the bush is alive with movement, drift along the river on a canoe, or take a gentle walk to learn about the smaller wonders of the wilderness.
The redesigned house will be open for the upcoming safari season, running from May 1st to November 15th. Chongwe House welcomes guests of all ages, and we can’t wait to hear the sounds of children discovering the wild, the quiet wonder of first-time safari-goers, and the joy of families making memories together. With it being merely 20-minutes away from Royal Airstrip, a 35-minute scenic flight or short helicopter transfer from Lusaka, your journey to this private sanctuary is as seamless as it is rewarding.
At its heart, Chongwe House is about comfort and connection. There are no distractions here – just the chance to reconnect with nature and the people around you. Our dedicated team is always ready to make sure your stay is as easy and enjoyable as possible, whether that’s preparing a meal on the deck or guiding you through the day’s activities. With a private guide and a variety of extraordinary experiences to choose from, including game drives, walks, and river excursions, there is always something to do – or simply enjoy the comforts of your safari home, if you prefer.
