South Luangwa

We have specifically located our safari camps in order for you to choose an open game drive between camps, a combination walk/drive or to walk from camp to camp in a circuit if you wish. The walks are at a leisurely pace and you don't need a high level of fitness; your bags will be transported for you, waiting in your room when you arrive. We are the only operator in the South Luangwa to have a full walking circuit of camps. We don't walk between Chinzombo and the bush camps; instead you will have a game drive when moving between Chinzombo and the seasonal camps.
Mfuwe Airport - Park Entrance 45 mins drive through the village
Chinzombo - Seasonal Camps 4 hours (game drive)
Luwi - Nsolo - 3.5 hours (8km)
Nsolo - Kakuli - 4.5 hours (14km)
Nsolo - Mchenja - 4 hours (14km)
Kakuli - Mchenja - 3 hours (7km)

Activities

Walking safaris
Explore and discover the untamed beauty and wildlife of the South Luangwa with our experienced guides at your side sharing their knowledge of fauna and flora. The best way to experience Africa - allowing one to become part of the landscape rather than a mere spectator. Our amazing guides make every step thrilling.

Activities

Boating
The river offers a perfect place from which to view a variety of game, predators on the bank, birds and breathtaking scenery. The river is high from January to April, making it the best time to enjoy a boating safari.

Activities

Sleepout
Set up camp on the white sand of the Luwi River with only wildlife and the stars for company. It's something you will never forget.

Activities

Canoeing
A special activity offered in Liuwa Plain from King Lewanika Lodge for guests between late January - early April (water level dependent). There are no hippos, crocs or tsetse flies so hop out and float down the temporary rivers in the warm sunlight.

History

Norman Carr, founder of Norman Carr Safaris, was a man ahead of his time - this bold innovator of the walking safari also initiated a far-reaching concept that was to pave the way for modern conservation and tourism.
Way back in 1950 he encouraged Senior Chief Nsefu - Paramount Chief of the Kunda people in the Luangwa Valley - to set aside a portion of tribal land as a Game Reserve and built the first game viewing camp open to the public in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). His dream was to secure the future of this unique wilderness
by ensuring that the local population would benefit through conservation of the wildlife and habitat of the Luangwa Valley. This led to the birth of Norman Carr Safaris. We are very proud of our history and Norman's legacy lives on in our people and the six camps we operate across the South Luangwa and Liuwa Plain National Parks.
The legacy of Norman Carr
Norman believed you never truly knew and understood a country until you'd walked it. We are still following in Norman's footsteps and the ideals he believed in:

"First of all, our safari was simply fabulous! As you know I am a safari veteran over a period of many years, and while they have all been wonderful (it's what keeps me coming back for more), I have never experienced the level of service, friendliness, and dedication that exists with Norman Carr."
