History

The largest of five islands in the archipelago, Time + Tide Miavana has an interesting history. A transient location for seasonal fisherman, the one small village lost its entire population (of around 10) after they ate turtle meat which was poisoned by seasonal algea. In the 1990’s the island was used by ‘pirates’ as a way to avoid police control on the roads between the Sava and Diana regions of northern Madagascar.

In 1998, Ibis Algoculture was created as a way to preserve the area, reduce fishing pressure and provide alternate employment through seaweed farming. The waters surrounding the archipelago are rich with nutrients and provide a fantastic environment for coral and marine life.

After many years of success, in 2010, following several episodes of extreme water heat, the algae production began to collapse which is how Time + Tide Miavana was born; an eco luxury accommodation development to ensure Time + Tide Miavana and the archipelago’s protection.
